NHI is not up for discussion – it is a fact. It is the structure of the model that is up for consultation and debate although no South African citizen will be exempted by virtue of membership to a medical scheme, the latter which may continue to exist secondary to NHI governed by legislation still to be decided - Dr Olive Shisana CEO, HRSC - at the recent BHF Conference.
Every South African has a right to healthcare that should be free with a choice of provider in the public and private sectors.
Mandatory progressive contribution in accordance with the publics ability to pay.
Universal access to health services that meet established quality standards.
Administration will be by the Public Sector in the form of a single funder run as a public entity.
