During a recent road show to announce and discuss the restructuring of the URC and the future plans for the Tiered Treatment Guidelines, it was again reiterated by many speakers that the sole function and mandate of the URC were to assess whether prescribed treatment is reasonable and appropriate and not to make funding decisions on behalf of medical schemes.
It was accepted that a patients individual and sometimes unique financial or funding situations should at all times be considered firstly by the treating doctor when prescribing a therapy and then by the panels when alerted there-of, but that the scheme at all times remained responsible and accountable for the final funding decision.
